Artists 4 Israel Highlights the Righteous Among the Nations Starting in Portugal
According to Yad Vashem World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Israel, the “Righteous Among the Nations” are non-Jews who took great risks to save Jews during the Holocaust. Rescue took many forms and the Righteous came from different nations, religions and walks of life. What they had in common was that they protected their Jewish neighbors at a time when terror prevailed.
Artists 4 Israel has undertaken an ambitious project to highlight as many of the (more than) 27,000 Righteous individuals in their home countries. The continuing mural project will start with an installation in Portugal, spring-boarding off of a recently funded large scale mural project in Budapest.
In June of 2020, consul Artistides De Sousa Mendes was finally recognized by Portugal as having saved thousands from the Holocaust (after long been recognized by the State of Israel for doing so).
A large scale mural will be painted by popular local artist Mr. Dheo. in Gaia/Porto to honor Artistides De Sousa Mendes, the risks he took as well as to remind the people of Portugal of their shared history with the Jewish people.
Mr. Dheo, having long been a member of Artists 4 Israel is proud to highlight the bravery of those fleeing Eastern Europe, matched by Artistides De Sousa Mendes who was on of the few willing to do the right thing.
